Pioneer Hike

An overnight alone to reflect as introduction to the Tribe of Chawanakee at Camp Chawanakee on Shaver Lake in California. 8-5-83

Pioneer Hike
(8-04-83)

Reflecting on the Scouting way,
while set alone within the wood;
I saw the boy that once was me
who sought to grow, be understood.

But now it’s someone else’s son
whose youthful zeal rings through the trees,
who looks to Me to understand,
to see the way He sees.

Thus, the cycle has come around,
the Scouting boy became a man;
and what he learned within his youth,
he returns, the best he can.

This is one of many things written as a Scouter since 1976 or so when I became reinvolved. Still am wearing many hats in Ventura, Califonia, first as SM now for over 40 years. Eagle 1959 in 29 Palms, California; Vigil Honor; Silver Beaver; 3 Bead Woodbadge; NOESA; Youth and Adult religious awards and old scouter stuff. 2 Philmont treks, 3 Jambos, first one 1960, then 1985 and 2010. Historian locally and sort of nationally in that went to PTC on course for Scouting History. Have many verses related to Scouting, as well as essays and stories. But, the included poem says pretty much what a Scouter does, or so it seems to me.
