The Power of the Square Knot

Joining Pack 83 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, as a Cub in 1954, Cubmaster Lohr taught me how to tie a square knot. If he had told me I’d tie over a million of them in a 44-year year career in oral and maxillofacial surgery, I’d not have believed him! The Scout oath and law have served me, my family, and my patients well, and I remain active in Scouting 67 years later, in my home council, on the BSA International and High Adventure Committees, and internationally as a Baden-Powell fellow. Three years ago, I revisited my old Pack in Ypsilanti, showed them a slide presentation of my great lifetime Scouting adventure, and taught(with some great assistance from the Pack leaders) 70 Cubs how to tie a square knot. I plan to go back again next year for a repeat lesson!
